Job Description

This medical imaging research job in Chennai is a Project Research Scientist I (Medical) post at IIT Madras, working on medical image analysis and deep learning for planning hyperthermia treatment, in the Department of Engineering Design (Advt. 193/2026).

At a glance

  • Position: Project Research Scientist I (Medical), 01 vacancy
  • Where: Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, Chennai
  • Pay: Rs 67,000 a month plus House Rent Allowance as admissible
  • Duration: Initially one year, extendable up to three years or the project duration, based on performance
  • Apply by: 2 October 2026

The coordinator is Prof. Kavitha Arunachalam of the Department of Engineering Design. The advertisement is dated 18 September 2026 and is issued by the Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research.

What the medical imaging and hyperthermia work involves

  • Medical image analysis and contouring of medical image data
  • Using machine learning tools for medical image analysis and contouring
  • Developing deep learning algorithms and implementing the DL workflow clinically for hyperthermia treatment planning
  • Device design using CAD tools
  • Contributing to hyperthermia device development, clinical device testing in the laboratory and animal study to establish safety, and the clinical study plan

Why this role matters

Hyperthermia treatment planning fails or succeeds on the contour: if the tissue boundaries are wrong, the thermal dose lands in the wrong place. Automating that step is a genuine clinical problem rather than a benchmark, and this post is unusual in asking for a medical graduate rather than a computer scientist — the person who draws the contours is the person who trains the model. Someone with an MBBS or BDS who wants to move into medical device development and clinical AI will rarely find a route in that starts this close to both the imaging and the device.

Eligibility

  • MBBS or BDS
  • Maximum age limit 35 years

The post is on a purely contract basis and confers no right to extension, regularisation or permanency at the Institute.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 67,000 a month plus House Rent Allowance as admissible
  • Initially one year, extendable up to three years or the duration of the project, based on performance
  • One vacancy

How to prepare for this application

  • Say what imaging modalities you have read clinically and in what volume; contouring experience on CT or MRI is the single most relevant thing you can put on the CV
  • You are not expected to arrive as a machine learning engineer, but show that you have started: a course, a segmentation project, or familiarity with tools such as 3D Slicer or ITK-SNAP all count
  • Read briefly on hyperthermia oncology so you can discuss why thermal dose planning needs accurate tissue boundaries
  • Any exposure to device regulation, animal studies or clinical trial protocols is directly relevant here — the role covers safety testing and the clinical study plan, not only the algorithm
  • Check the age limit of 35 years before applying, as it is stated in the qualification table without exception
