Job Description
CSIR-NML in Jamshedpur is holding a walk-in for two Project JRF posts in graphite processing on an ANRF-CRMR project (TMP-249) to develop and scale up a process for producing high-grade graphite from natural graphite.
At a glance
- Post: Project-JRF, 2 positions
- Where: CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
- Pay: ₹37,000 a month + HRA
- Age limit: 28 years on the interview date (relaxable as per rules)
- Tenure: Co-terminus with the time-bound project
- Walk-in interview: 9 October 2026 (Group-H), report 9:00–11:00 am
The posts are in Group-H of Advertisement No. T/PS/04/2026, dated 22 September 2026. The same group also lists a Project Scientist-I (PhD in Geology, ₹77,000 + HRA) and a Project Associate-I; this listing covers the two JRF posts. In the ad’s layout the JRF rows follow the TMP-249 project row within Group-H.
About the high-grade graphite process project
- Work on beneficiation and purification steps that upgrade natural graphite to high-grade material
- Run laboratory and scale-up trials and characterise the graphite produced
- Record process data and help optimise the flowsheet with the project team
The ad gives the project title but not a list of duties; the points above describe the typical work on such a project. High-purity graphite is the main anode material in lithium-ion batteries, which is why it is treated as a critical mineral.
Why this role matters
Graphite is on India’s list of critical minerals, and turning domestic natural graphite into battery-grade material is a growing research need. A JRF on this project builds process skills that battery-materials companies look for.
Eligibility
- B.Tech in Chemical, Metallurgical, Mechanical or Mineral Engineering
- Selected through CSIR-UGC NET (including lectureship) or GATE, or a national-level selection process of a central government department or agency (such as DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, ICMR, ICAR, IIT, IISc or IISER)
- Age: up to 28 years on the date of the interview
Indian nationals only. The age limit is relaxed by five years for SC/ST candidates and three years for OBC, and also for PwBD and women candidates as the ad sets out. Students awaiting final results are not eligible. If many candidates turn up, a screening test may be held first. The ad says offers depend on funds reaching the project, and no TA/DA is paid.
Pay and duration
- ₹37,000 a month + HRA (Project-JRF, as per DST norms)
- Temporary engagement, co-terminus with the project; either side may end it with one month’s notice
How to apply
There is no online application. Download the proforma at the end of the NML advertisement (also listed on the NML temporary careers page), paste a recent colour photograph on it, and bring it with self-attested copies and the originals of all certificates to CSIR-NML, Burmamines, Jamshedpur, between 9:00 and 11:00 am on the walk-in date. A separate form is needed for each group.
Key dates

How to prepare for this application
- Bring your GATE or NET proof: the JRF posts require it, so carry the scorecard with the originals.
- Revise graphite processing: flotation, grinding that preserves flake size, and chemical or thermal purification to high carbon content.
- Link it to batteries: be ready to say why anode-grade graphite needs spheroidisation, high purity and a coating.
- Know the characterisation: fixed-carbon analysis, XRD, Raman (D/G ratio) and particle-size analysis.
- Show plant sense: any internship at a mineral or metal plant helps. Browse more JRF jobs.
