The project
The Artificial Intelligence in Molecular Medicine Lab, led by Professor Charlotte Bunne, sits at the interface of computer science and the life sciences. It is affiliated with EPFL’s School of Computer and Communication Sciences, its School of Life Sciences, and the EPFL AI Center.
This postdoctoral position is part of an industry collaboration with Novartis and focuses on multimodal foundation models. Molecular medicine generates data of very different kinds at once: images, sequences, perturbation screens, clinical records. A foundation model that can hold several of those modalities together is the thing this field has been reaching for, and a pharmaceutical partner is where it meets real decisions.
What you need
- A PhD in computer science, machine learning, computational biology or a related field
- Experience training or adapting large models, ideally across more than one data modality
- Read the official advertisement for the full requirements
Pay and conditions
EPFL pays doctoral assistants and postdoctoral researchers on published Swiss federal scales, which are among the higher ones in Europe. This advertisement states no figure, so check the scale for your grade and the cost of living in Lausanne before you decide.

How to prepare for this application
- Industry collaboration is part of the post. Say how you work with partners outside academia.
- Biology literacy matters. This is not a generic vision or language post; the modalities are molecular.
- EPFL works in English. Research and teaching at this level run in English, so French is useful but rarely required.
- Doctoral candidates apply twice. A lab offer at EPFL is normally followed by admission to a doctoral programme, so check the programme's own requirements too.
