About the work

The project sits at the intersection of human stem cell biology, disease modelling, functional genomics and translational neuroscience. You would develop and use patient stem cell-derived models of progressive MS to investigate the molecular mechanisms driving maladaptive glial responses, apply functional genomic approaches to find and validate new disease-modifying targets, and push those discoveries towards therapies.

The post is in the UK MS Society Cambridge Centre for Myelin Repair, one of the MS Society’s two national Centres of Excellence. Established in 2005, it has just been renewed for a fifth five-year term with the mission of accelerating effective treatments for progressive MS, a condition for which no therapy currently halts disability progression. It is led by Professors Káradóttir and Pluchino among others.

What you need

  • Experience with human induced pluripotent stem cells and differentiation to neural or glial lineages
  • Functional genomics experience, such as CRISPR screening
  • Read the official advertisement for the full person specification. The grade offered depends on whether your doctorate has been awarded

Pay

The advertised range is £34,610 to £35,608 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application

  • iPSC work is the core skill. Name the lineages you have differentiated and the protocols you used.
  • Progressive MS has no disease-modifying therapy. That is the problem this centre exists to solve, so frame your interest around it.
  • Quote the reference, RR51113. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
