About the work
Membrane-based separations sit at the centre of several sustainability problems, from securing critical metal supplies for the energy transition to energy-efficient water treatment. Designing the next generation of membrane processes needs predictive computational models that connect molecular-scale behaviour to system-level performance.
The obstacle is that the thermodynamics and transport behaviour of concentrated, multi-ion aqueous solutions are still poorly understood, which limits rational membrane design and process optimisation.
This project builds predictive frameworks for membrane-based ion separation by combining molecular simulation, thermodynamic modelling and continuum transport theory. It is funded by a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship.
What you need
- A PhD in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, materials or a related field, or close to completion
- Experience with molecular simulation, thermodynamic modelling or continuum transport theory
- Read the official advertisement for the full person specification. The grade offered depends on whether your doctorate has been awarded
Pay
The advertised range is £33,002 to £46,049 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application
- Three scales meet here. Molecular simulation, thermodynamics and continuum transport. Say which you own.
- Critical metals and water treatment are the applications. Framing your interest around one of them helps.
- Quote the reference, NQ50329. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
- Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
