About the work

The postholder is based in the Faculty of Divinity on West Road, Cambridge. The appointment runs from 1 September 2027.

Teaching is a substantial part of the post. The appointee teaches on the Undergraduate Tripos, the Advanced Diploma and the MPhil, supervises doctoral students, and takes on administrative duties within the Faculty. The advertisement sets the teaching load at around 40 to 48 lecture-room contact hours across the three terms of the academic year, with a substantial contribution to Part II of the Tripos.

The Faculty of Divinity teaches philosophy of religion alongside theology and the study of religion, so the post sits in a department where Islamic philosophy is read in conversation with other traditions.

What you need

  • A doctorate in Islamic Philosophy
  • Either a proven record of, or demonstrable potential for, high-quality research and publication in any aspect of Medieval Islamic Philosophy
  • The ability to teach across undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to supervise doctoral students

Pay

The advertised range is £47,389 to £59,966 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application

  • Medieval Islamic Philosophy is named specifically. Make your fit to that period explicit.
  • The teaching load is published. 40 to 48 contact hours a year, so prepare a teaching statement that engages with the Tripos.
  • Quote the reference, GF50963. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
