- Where: ETH AI Center, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
- Pay: CHF 92,500 in year 1 and CHF 97,200 in year 2
- Start: Flexible, typically in September
- Places: The web page says 8 to 12; the 2027 guidelines say 5 to 8 a year
- Apply: Tuesday 27 October 2026, 16:00 CET
What the ETH AI postdoc fellowship involves
- Your own proposed research project on AI, in AI foundations or between AI and an application field
- Supervision by ETH AI Center faculty; the web page describes two PIs from different fields with equal weight
- A primary office at the ETH AI Center, shared with fellows from all disciplines
- Retreats, symposia, summits, workshops and summer schools
- An optional entrepreneurial or industry track
Why this role matters
Most postdocs join an existing grant and its fixed plan. This fellowship funds your own idea and links you to faculty across all ETH departments. It is a common step toward a faculty post, an industry lab or a start-up.
Selection process
- The deadline is 27 October 2026, 16:00 CET, for applications and reference letters
- The fellowship team pre-screens, then ETH AI Center faculty assess the applications
- Results of the written stage come within about three months of the deadline
- Shortlisted candidates join a virtual symposium and interviews; some may be asked to solve problems or write code
- Unsuccessful candidates may apply again in a later call
What ETH AI Center is looking for
- A PhD in computer science, physics, engineering, applied mathematics or another field relevant to AI, or completion of the PhD within 10 months of the deadline
- A background in AI or in computer science, machine learning, statistics, physics, engineering or applied mathematics
- English good enough to discuss your work and write it up
- Interest in working with an interdisciplinary team
Pay and location
The page lists a salary of CHF 92,500 in the first year and CHF 97,200 in the second, with automatic advancement. The page also lists 5 weeks of vacation, support for training, childcare subsidies, 4 months of paid maternity leave and 10 days of paid paternity leave. The ETH AI Center encourages women and people with disabilities to apply. Read the official 2027 guidelines (PDF) before applying. The guidelines and the web page give different numbers of places and of faculty, so check both.
How to apply
Apply through the official ETH AI Center page. The closing date is Tuesday 27 October 2026, 16:00 CET. Apply only through the ETH AI Center post-doc fellowship portal; email and post are not accepted. Upload a detailed CV with publications and awards, a 1–2 page research statement naming your intended collaborators, scanned degree certificates and a 2–5 minute video on your research interests. Two or three referees submit letters through the portal before the deadline.
