Job Description

These two PhD positions in superconducting quantum computing are at Chalmers in Gothenburg, Sweden. You will help build the next large superconducting quantum processors. One track works on nanofabrication; the other on circuit design and microwave simulation.

At a glance

  • Positions: 2 doctoral students, 4 years (up to 5 with teaching), REF 2026-0483
  • Where: Quantum Technology Laboratory, Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), Chalmers, Gothenburg
  • Pay: SEK 35,725 a month starting salary (valid from 1 May 2026)
  • Funding: Fully funded from the start
  • Contact: Dr. Giovanna Tancredi
  • Apply: 5 November 2026

About the superconducting quantum processor projects

  • Nanofabrication track: develop and improve fabrication processes for superconducting devices, and study materials and methods to find and cut sources of loss
  • Design track: design superconducting circuits and run electromagnetic and microwave simulations of larger quantum processors
  • Take advanced courses in the department’s graduate school
  • Develop your own ideas and report them in papers and talks
  • Teach or do other department work for about 20% of your time
  • Work with experimentalists, theorists and engineers on testing quantum hardware

The posts sit in the Quantum Computing group of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT). WACQT started in 2018 as a 12-year programme. Its core project is a quantum computer built from superconducting circuits. State your preferred project in your personal letter.

Why this role matters

Better fabrication and design are what let superconducting chips grow from tens to hundreds of qubits. Chalmers has its own large cleanroom and a national quantum computer project. A PhD here gives you skills that quantum companies hire for directly.

What Chalmers is looking for

  • A master’s degree of 120 credits (or a magisterexamen of 60 credits) in physics, applied physics or nanotechnology; a 4-year bachelor’s degree is accepted for degrees earned outside Sweden
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • Experience in superconducting circuits, experimental quantum computing, quantum optics or a related area of experimental physics
  • Care for detail, an analytical mind and enjoyment of teamwork

Nice to have

  • Nanofabrication
  • Microwave measurements or microwave simulations
  • Cryogenics
  • Experimental quantum computing

Pay and location

The starting salary is SEK 35,725 a month, valid from 1 May 2026. The post is a fixed-term job of four years, and up to five years with up to 20% teaching. PhD students at Chalmers are employees with full employee benefits. You must be physically present for the whole study period. You must show a valid residence permit by the start date, or the admission may be withdrawn. A background check may be done.

How to apply

Apply through the official Chalmers page. The closing date is 5 November 2026. Use the button on the ad page. Upload, as PDFs in English: CV; a personal letter with a short introduction, your motivation and preferred project; and your bachelor’s and master’s theses with transcripts. Email applications are not considered. Interviews run on an ongoing basis.

How to prepare for this application

  • Choose the fabrication track or the design track, and say why in your personal letter
  • Revise transmon basics: Josephson junctions, coherence times and the main loss channels
  • Learn the basics of a microwave simulator such as Sonnet, HFSS or Qiskit Metal if you choose the design track
  • Describe any cleanroom work you have done: lithography, etching and deposition steps
  • Attach your bachelor's and master's theses and transcripts as PDFs; zip files are not supported
