Job Description
This postdoc in superconducting quantum circuits is with the Hybrid Quantum Circuits Research Team at the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing, near Tokyo. RIKEN is hiring a few postdoctoral researchers or research scientists. They will design and test qubits for a fault-tolerant superconducting quantum computer.
At a glance
- Positions: A few Postdoctoral Researchers or Research Scientists (job 26-1488)
- Where: RIKEN Wako Campus, Wako, Saitama, Japan; on site
- Team Director: Atsushi Noguchi
- Pay: From 400,000 yen a month (postdoc) or 470,000 yen a month (research scientist), with allowances
- Contract: 1 year, renewable on evaluation up to 31 March 2031
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 13 November 2026)
About the hybrid quantum circuits work
- Work on “Design and Characterization of Qubits for Integrated Circuits” in the Moonshot Goal 6 project to build a fault-tolerant superconducting quantum computer
- Do research on quantum electronics with superconducting circuits
- Do research on hybrid quantum systems, such as microwave resonators and trapped electrons controlled by superconducting circuits
The team builds long-lived quantum systems and controls them with superconducting circuits. Its aim is to beat their natural lifetimes using quantum error correction. RIKEN calls you a Postdoctoral Researcher if your doctorate is 5 years old or less, and a Research Scientist if it is older.
Why this role matters
Japan’s Moonshot programme funds a long push towards an error-corrected quantum computer. This team works on the qubits that such a machine needs. The contract can run to 2031, which gives time for deep work.
What RIKEN is looking for
- A doctorate in a related field, or one expected by the hiring date
- Research experience in quantum technologies
- Ability to work on site at Wako; this post does not allow remote work
Pay and location
The ad gives the starting pay as at least 400,000 yen a month for a Postdoctoral Researcher and at least 470,000 yen a month for a Research Scientist. Both figures include the discretionary work allowance. Commuting and housing allowances are paid, and social insurance applies. The contract is for one year and can be renewed on evaluation up to 31 March 2031. The first two months are a trial period. The ad says the post is open until filled, with a start as early as possible.
How to apply
Apply through the official RIKEN job posting. RIKEN’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 13 November 2026. Put the documents in the ad (except reference letters) into one ZIP whose file name includes your email address. Upload it through the link on the ad, then email the file name to Atsushi Noguchi at the address on the ad. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Fill in the RQC-CV form and write the job number 26-1488 in the box at the top right
- Keep the research summary and plan to 3 pages (5 for a Research Scientist); link it to qubit design and testing
- Pick your 3 best papers (5 for a Research Scientist) and say what you did in each
- Ask your referee early; the letter goes straight to RIKEN's upload link
- Revise circuit QED, qubit design tools and coherence measurement, and prepare for an oral presentation
About RIKEN
RIKEN is Japan's largest research organisation for basic and applied science. Its main campus is in Wako, Saitama, near Tokyo. The RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing (RQC) works on quantum computing hardware and software, and on quantum control and measurement.
