Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The work develops data-driven manufacturing systems that bring together artificial intelligence, real-time sensing and digital twins, to change how critical components are designed, produced and qualified. The aim is scalable, deployable methods that improve manufacturing quality, efficiency and certification readiness.
You would work at the MDF, which hosts powder bed, directed energy deposition, machining, polymer and convergent manufacturing systems used to make critical components from advanced materials. Those machines are instrumented and tied together by a unified digital thread that captures multimodal, high-frequency data across the whole manufacturing lifecycle, from process execution through to post-process characterisation. That is what makes high-fidelity digital twins and AI-ready datasets possible.
From those large, heterogeneous datasets you would build AI methods for real-time quality monitoring and control of manufacturing processes, and for understanding how process signals relate to the properties of the finished part.
What you need
- A PhD in data science, computer science, materials science, mechanical engineering or a related field
- Machine learning on large, messy, multimodal sensor data
- An interest in manufacturing as the application, since the datasets come off real machines
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16779. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Sensor data is the raw material. Show work on high-frequency, multimodal signals as well as clean tabular sets.
- Qualification and certification are the end goal. Framing your work around trust in the part will land well.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16779. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
