Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in fusion materials and hydrogen isotope separation. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fusion Materials and Hydrogen Isotope Separation
- Where: Fusion Materials and Technology, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA
- Requisition ID: 17102
- Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
- Pay: the advertisement states no figure
Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The work has two halves. The first is developing separation methods using mass spectrometry, microfluidics and MEMS to study gaseous mixtures, and applying them to separating hydrogen isotopes from contaminants. That matters for tritium technology, which any deuterium-tritium fusion plant has to solve before it can run.
The second is investigating the mechanical and thermophysical behaviour of irradiated ceramics and alloys for tritium technology, using advanced experimental and computational methods. You would characterise model systems with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.
What you need
- A PhD in materials science, chemistry, nuclear engineering, physics or a related field
- Required: experience reducing large spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and image datasets
- Expected: understanding and hands-on experience with vacuum instruments
- Desirable: nano- and micro-fabrication of MEMS and microfluidics, and catalytic reactor design
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17102. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Vacuum hardware is an expectation here. Say what systems you have built or run.
- Big-data reduction is listed as required. Name the spectrometry or imaging pipelines you have handled.
- Quote the requisition ID, 17102. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
