The work

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division works on detecting, characterising and monitoring nuclear fuel cycle activities and nuclear explosions; on concepts and technologies that strengthen global security for nuclear and radiological material; and with federal agencies on international nonproliferation regimes.

In this post you would do research and development in nuclear nonproliferation using computational reactor physics, through modelling and simulation. The named areas are reactor core physics, nuclear fuel cycle assessments, radionuclide inventories and source terms.

The customers for this work are the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Energy and other government agencies, which shapes how the research is scoped and reported.

What you need

  • A PhD in nuclear engineering, physics or a closely related field
  • Computational reactor physics: depletion, transport, or fuel cycle modelling
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17105. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application

  • National security work carries citizenship conditions more often than other ORNL posts. Check the posting before applying from outside the US.
  • Name the codes. SCALE, MCNP, Serpent or ORIGEN.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 17105. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
