Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in electromagnetic transient simulation for the power grid. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Power Grid Electromagnetic Transient Modelling
- Where: Grid Transients and Advanced Modeling Group, Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA
- Requisition ID: 16569
- Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
- Pay: the advertisement states no figure
Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The work covers electromagnetic transient simulation and the software behind it, together with dynamic and transient inverter modelling and the applications of those simulations. As grids fill with inverter-based resources, the old quasi-steady-state models stop describing what the system actually does on short timescales, which is why EMT work matters now.
The group supports the Department of Energy’s energy reliability mission, including research for the Office of Electricity, the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response, and Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation.
The advertisement asks for someone highly self-motivated and independent, conducting research under general guidance, preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting to sponsors and at conferences.
What you need
- A PhD in electrical or power systems engineering, or a closely related field
- Electromagnetic transient simulation, and power electronics or inverter modelling
- Software development alongside the modelling
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16569. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Two grades of this post are advertised. This is the postdoctoral one; there is also a Research Associate role on the same project.
- Name your EMT tools. PSCAD, EMTP, RTDS or an open-source equivalent.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16569. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
