Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the intersection of quantum computing and high-performance computing. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Quantum-HPC Co-Design and Integration
- Where: Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA
- Requisition ID: 16984
- Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
- Pay: the advertisement states no figure
Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The post contributes to modelling, simulation and co-design of next-generation Quantum-HPC architectures, with emphasis on integrating quantum and HPC distributed computing runtimes with applications and compilers, so quantum processors can be used efficiently alongside HPC resources.
The research explores different quantum computing modalities, their architectural characteristics and system-level requirements, and how suitable each is for scientific applications. You would build modelling and simulation capability to evaluate quantum, classical and hybrid approaches quantitatively, and investigate the trade-offs in architecture, performance, resources and scalability.
This is the systems-engineering side of quantum computing. Most of the field works on qubits; comparatively few people work on how a quantum processor would actually sit inside a supercomputing centre and be scheduled, programmed and shared.
What you need
- A PhD in computer science, computer engineering, physics or a related field
- Architectural modelling and simulation, and an understanding of quantum computing modalities
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16984. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- This is architecture work. Simulators, performance models and runtimes are the currency.
- Several modalities are in scope. Superconducting, trapped-ion, neutral-atom and photonic each imply different integration problems.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16984. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
