The work

You would lead the development of pooled screening technology for measuring and engineering how biological nanoparticles deliver molecular cargo into cells, then use it to find and engineer next-generation delivery vehicles such as virus-like particles and vesicles. Delivery is the bottleneck in most genetic medicine, so a screen that measures it quantitatively is a real lever.

The work starts with quantitative molecular readouts of cargo delivery and pooled screens in cultured mammalian cells, then scales to large multiplexed libraries. Longer term these approaches are meant to reveal the principles that govern cellular delivery and to enable efficient, precise, targeted delivery to specific cell types.

You would collaborate across Arc’s labs and Technology Centers, including groups leading on RNA biology and RNA medicine, single-cell genomics, genome engineering, and AI and machine learning.

What you need

  • A track record of turning concepts into reliable methods and results in an interdisciplinary setting
  • A passion for technology development in synthetic biology, cell biology and drug delivery
  • Strength in organisation, time management and running several projects in parallel
  • Good troubleshooting and documentation habits while working at pace
  • Read the official advertisement for the full list of requirements

About the employer

Arc Institute is an independent nonprofit research organisation working at the interface of artificial intelligence and biology. It was founded in 2021, is based in Palo Alto, and partners with Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. Its own pitch is that its scientists get long-term funding and industry-scale resources while staying free to chase high-risk, long-horizon questions.

How to apply

Apply through the Arc Institute job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show a platform you built. The advert wants proof you can turn a concept into a method others can use.
  • Quantitative readouts come first. Say how you have measured delivery or cargo release before.
  • Name your collaborators. This post sits between several Arc technology centres.
  • Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
