The work
The Hahn Lab asks why particular cells in the brain, above all the resident immune cells called microglia, are among the earliest and most vulnerable sites of ageing, and how that vulnerability feeds neurodegeneration. Its central mission is to decode and ultimately reprogram the brain’s immune system so that age-related neuroinflammation can be dampened or reversed.
The fellowship itself is a fixed-term educational assignment: three years, with a possible fourth-year extension, and rolling start dates. Fellows are fully part of Calico’s labs and community, and the programme is built to train people into independent investigators in academia or industry. You would lead your own project with dedicated resources for high-risk, high-reward work, publish it, and present to mixed audiences of computational scientists, lab scientists and engineers. There is a formal annual review with career coaching, plus an annual Postdoc Summit, research-in-progress talks and skill-building workshops.
One practical detail: the role requires you to work onsite five days a week.
What you need
- A PhD completed recently in a relevant scientific or computational field. Current PhD students may apply within 12 months of finishing
- Graduates must have finished within the past three years, and must not have held postdoc posts at more than one other lab or company since
- Important contributions to your area, ideally a meaningful first-author paper accepted for publication
- Core scientific method, analytical skill and quantitative problem solving. The specific techniques depend on the project
- Strong teamwork and communication, flexibility when priorities shift, and willingness to work onsite five days a week
What you have to submit
The application has four parts: a one to two page original research proposal on what you would investigate in the Hahn Lab, an updated CV with a full publication list, a cover letter, and two to three references including your PhD supervisor.

- Five days onsite is a stated condition. Factor that into any relocation plan.
