The work
The Nile Lab studies the basic mechanisms by which E3 ubiquitin ligases recognise, modify and regulate their substrates. The aim is to work out the biochemical and biophysical principles that govern ubiquitin and UBL signalling: how E3 ligases achieve specificity, how their activity is tuned, and how those insights could be used to redirect E3 ligase activity through chemical biology.
That last point is where the field has become exciting. Redirecting a ligase to tag a protein you choose is the mechanism behind targeted protein degradation, so basic specificity work here feeds straight into drug design.
The fellowship is a fixed-term educational assignment: three years, with a possible fourth-year extension, and rolling start dates. You would lead your own project with dedicated resources for high-risk, high-reward work, publish it, and present to mixed audiences of computational scientists, lab scientists and engineers. There is a formal annual review with career coaching, plus an annual Postdoc Summit, research-in-progress talks and skill-building workshops. The role requires you to work onsite five days a week.
What you need
- A PhD completed recently in a relevant scientific or computational field. Current PhD students may apply within 12 months of finishing
- Graduates must have finished within the past three years, and must not have held postdoc posts at more than one other lab or company since
- Important contributions to your area, ideally a meaningful first-author paper accepted for publication
- Core scientific method, analytical skill and quantitative problem solving. The specific techniques depend on the project
- Strong teamwork and communication, flexibility when priorities shift, and willingness to work onsite five days a week
What you have to submit
The application has four parts: a one to two page original research proposal on what you would investigate in the Nile Lab, an updated CV with a full publication list, a cover letter, and two to three references including your PhD supervisor.
About the employer
Calico Life Sciences is an Alphabet-founded research and development company. Its mission is to understand the biology that controls human ageing and to use that knowledge to help people live longer, healthier lives. It runs technology labs, curiosity-driven discovery science, and a drug-development pipeline with academic and industry partners.
How to apply
Apply through the Calico Life Sciences job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application
- Bring quantitative biochemistry. The lab works on biochemical and biophysical principles, so assays and kinetics matter.
- The proposal should name a ligase or a question. Generic ubiquitin interest will read as thin.
- Check the eligibility window. Within 12 months of submitting, or graduated within three years, and at most one previous postdoc.
- Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
