Job Description
The University of Queensland is hiring a postdoctoral research fellow in hybrid glass X-ray scintillators. You will make new glass materials for flexible, wearable X-ray detectors for low-dose imaging of children. The post pays A$85,372 to A$113,659 a year plus 17% superannuation.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Officer, Academic Level A, full time, up to 2 years (R-69233)
- Where: School of Chemical Engineering, St Lucia campus, Brisbane, Australia
- Pay: A$85,372 to A$113,659 a year base, plus 17% superannuation
- Group: Associate Prof. Jingwei Hou
- Funding: NHMRC Investigator Grant on wearable X-ray detectors for children’s lung disease
- Apply: 5 November 2026, 11.00 pm AEST
What the X-ray scintillator postdoc will do
- Lead the materials work: design, make and characterise hybrid glass scintillators
- Link glass structure to scintillation performance
- Lead synchrotron experiments, from beamtime proposals to data analysis
- Help build a prototype detector with collaborators
- Publish, present, and help write grant applications
- Help supervise research and undergraduate students, and do some teaching
Why this role matters
Children are more sensitive to radiation than adults. A detector that is flexible and more sensitive could cut the X-ray dose they get. MOF and hybrid glasses are a young field, and few groups make them. Synchrotron experience from this post is useful in any materials career.
What University of Queensland is looking for
- A PhD, awarded or nearly complete, in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field
- Deep knowledge of hybrid glasses, such as MOF glasses, coordination-polymer glasses or hybrid metal halide glasses
- Hands-on synchrotron work, from proposal to analysis
- A publication record that fits your career stage
- Able to work alone and in a mixed team
Nice to have
- MOF glass synthesis and characterisation
- Thin-film or flexible device making
- Structure modelling of amorphous materials, such as reverse Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics
Pay and location
Base salary is A$85,372 to A$113,659 a year at Academic Level A, plus 17% superannuation. The post is full time and fixed term for up to two years, on the St Lucia campus in Brisbane. The ad says visa sponsorship may be offered, and UQ may help with work rights and relocation. Up-front costs are yours.
How to apply
Apply through the official University of Queensland page. The closing date is 5 November 2026, 11.00 pm AEST. Apply online through UQ’s Workday page with a resume, a cover letter and answers to the “About You” questions. Emailed applications are not accepted. Quote R-69233 in any query to talent@uq.edu.au.

How to prepare for this application
- Show glass work in detail: the melt-quench steps, and how you proved the glass was amorphous
- List your synchrotron beamtimes, the techniques used, and what you learned
- Read on scintillator figures of merit such as light yield, decay time and detection limit
- Link structure to property with one clear example from your PhD
- Address each essential criterion in the cover letter
