OpenAI is hiring an Applied AI Engineer in India, based in Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore, to design, build and deploy AI systems with leading organisations, taking ideas from use-case selection and architecture through prototyping and evaluation to production launch and scale.

About the applied AI engineer role

• Work with enterprise customers to find high-value opportunities and turn them into architectures, implementation plans, evaluation strategies and success criteria
• Write code for prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, integrations and production accelerators
• Make technical decisions across models, agents, retrieval, tools, data, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security and governance
• Diagnose complex implementation problems and drive blockers to resolution
• Feed deployment lessons back to OpenAI’s product, research, engineering and security teams, and create reusable playbooks

Enterprise AI deployments are hard for reasons that have little to do with model quality: existing architectures, messy data, security and governance rules, and many stakeholders. Roles like this one sit between customers and OpenAI’s product and research teams, and turn lessons from real deployments into better products.

What OpenAI is looking for

• A record of designing, building and delivering AI or ML systems in enterprise environments, from prototype to production
• A relevant background such as applied AI or ML engineering, forward-deployed engineering or software engineering
• Strong hands-on coding and evaluation skills
• Customer leadership: the ability to guide technical decisions with customer engineering and executive teams

Pay and location
