Job Description

ETH Zurich’s Medical Data Science Group, led by Prof. Julia Vogt, seeks a PhD student in machine learning for medicine. You will build new AI methods for healthcare data. The preferred deadline is 22 November 2026, and the preferred start is 1 January 2027.

What the medical machine learning PhD involves

• Do independent research on new machine learning and AI methods for medicine and healthcare
• Possible topics: representation learning, training foundation models, generative AI, explainability, probabilistic models, time series and multimodal learning
• Set your topic together with Prof. Vogt
• Design and test models with care, and keep your research reproducible
• Publish at conferences and in journals, and write a doctoral thesis
• Work with technical and medical experts, and help with teaching and student projects

Why this role matters

Hospitals hold huge amounts of data, but few models are safe and clear enough to use with patients. This group works on methods doctors can trust. You get core machine learning training with real medical problems.

What ETH Zurich is looking for

• A master’s in computer science, machine learning, statistics, applied maths or a close field
• Strong maths, statistics and machine learning foundations, and solid programming such as Python
• Interest in both core machine learning and medical uses
• An independent, systematic way of working and strong analysis skills
• Strong English, and openness to feedback

Nice to have

• Experience with medical or biological data (an advantage; the ad says it is optional)

Pay and location
