Job Description

IIT Bombay offers Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowships (IPDF) in all its academic departments, centres, schools and interdisciplinary programmes, with applications accepted all year round. It is one of the best-paid institute postdoc schemes in India, and it suits fresh Ph.D.s who want to build an independent research profile.

At a glance

  • Scheme: Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship (IPDF)
  • Where: Any academic unit of IIT Bombay, Mumbai
  • Pay: Rs 80,000 per month (consolidated) plus HRA as per Government of India norms (currently 30%), and a non-lapsable contingency grant of Rs 1,00,000 a year
  • Duration: Generally one year, extendable for two more years on satisfactory performance
  • Apply by: No last date; applications are considered year-round

Institute-funded postdoctoral fellowships give early-career researchers a salary and a research grant from the institute itself, rather than from one professor’s project. That usually means more freedom to choose a mentor and a topic, and they are often a stepping stone to faculty jobs.

About the fellowship

  • Carry out research with a mentor whose area is closest to yours
  • Take on reasonable academic or administrative tasks that the Head of the academic unit may assign
  • Present your work: the institute funds one international conference during the fellowship (typically after a year) and one national conference a year

Eligibility

  • A fresh Ph.D., or a Ph.D. with less than two years of experience, or a research scholar who has submitted the thesis and is awaiting examination
  • Preferably below 32 years of age, with relaxation for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD candidates as per Government of India norms
  • IIT Bombay’s own Ph.D. students are not eligible

Academic units evaluate applications through a process similar to faculty selection. Their search committees meet regularly and arrange invited seminars or interviews as needed. Rolling programme: there is no closing date. ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 12 October 2026.

How to prepare for this application

  • Pick the right unit: read faculty pages and identify one or two likely mentors before applying.
  • Research plan: write a focused two-page plan that fits the department, not a copy of your thesis abstract.
  • Seminar: prepare a 30-45 minute talk on your Ph.D. work pitched at a broad departmental audience.
  • Timing: since there is no deadline, apply as soon as your thesis is submitted.
  • Follow up: a short, polite email to the Head of the unit after applying is normal.
