Job Description

This JRF in metallurgy at IIT Indore uses CALPHAD and DFT to design high-temperature BCC + B2 alloys. Experiments check the predictions. Email your application by 28 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Post: Junior Research Fellow (JRF), one post
  • Where: Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS), IIT Indore
  • Principal Investigator: Dr Venkata Vamsi Koruprolu
  • Funded by: ANRF, Advanced Research Grant (ARG)
  • Fellowship: ₹37,000 a month, plus HRA
  • Duration: One year to start, extendable
  • Age limit: 28 years
  • Apply by: 28 October 2026, by email

The project is “Computational Exploration and Design of BCC + B2 Superalloys”. The ad dates from 8 October 2026. It gives preference to candidates who want to do a Ph.D. at IIT Indore.

About the superalloys JRF at IIT Indore

  • Use CALPHAD and DFT to study phase stability, defects and deformation in BCC + B2 alloys
  • Help run experiments that test the computer predictions
  • Work towards better alloys for high-temperature use

Why this role matters

Jet engines and power plants need metals that stay strong when red hot. Computer-led alloy design cuts years of trial and error. Skills in CALPHAD and DFT are in demand in labs and in industry.

Eligibility

  • M.Tech./M.E./M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Production Engineering, with GATE qualified at least once; or
  • M.Sc. in Materials Science, Physics, or Nanoscience and Technology, with a valid GATE, UGC/CSIR-JRF or an equal fellowship; or
  • B.Tech./B.E. in the engineering subjects above or Engineering Physics, with a valid GATE score
  • Desirable: physical metallurgy, thermodynamics, mechanical behaviour, microstructure work, mechanical testing and Python for data analysis
  • Upper age limit: 28 years

Shortlisting is on merit and project needs. The interview is online, and the link goes only to shortlisted candidates. The post is temporary and ends with the project. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview.

Pay and duration

  • ₹37,000 a month, plus HRA
  • Hostel may be given if available; otherwise HRA applies
  • One year to start, extendable on performance and project tenure

How to apply

Email one PDF to kvvamsi@iiti.ac.in with the subject line “Application for the position of JRF (ANRF-ARG project)”. Put in your CV, a statement of purpose, self-attested certificates, your GATE scorecard and any publications. The deadline is 28 October 2026. Read the official advertisement (PDF); it is listed on the IIT Indore JRF/SRF page.

Key dates

  • Last date to apply: 28 October 2026

How to prepare for this application

  • Revise CALPHAD: Gibbs energy models, phase diagrams and how databases are built and checked.
  • Know DFT basics: formation energy, ordering in B2 phases and how defects are modelled.
  • Learn the alloy family: read about BCC + B2 superalloys and how they compare with nickel superalloys.
  • Link structure and strength: be ready to explain precipitation, solid-solution and order strengthening.
  • Write a sharp statement of purpose: the ad prefers Ph.D.-minded candidates, so say what you want to study. Use our Find a supervisor page to compare metallurgy labs.
