About the machine learning JRF posts at NIT Kurukshetra

  • Sub-project 1 (Dr Vikram Singh): Deep-Test-All, a genetic-algorithm framework for robust testing of deep learning models used in antimicrobial resistance diagnostics and therapeutics
  • Sub-project 2 (Dr Yogita): an interpretable and efficient machine learning framework to predict antimicrobial resistance to drugs
  • Work may move between NIT Kurukshetra and IIT Indore as the project needs

Why this role matters

Drug-resistant infections are a growing public health problem in India. AI tools that predict resistance can help doctors pick the right drug sooner, but only if the models are tested and explained well. These posts work on both.

Eligibility

  • A postgraduate degree in Engineering or Technology with 60% marks or a 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale (5% or 0.5 CGPA relaxation for SC/ST/PwD)
  • Or a full-time B.E./B.Tech. with at least 75% marks or an 8.0 CGPA
  • Final-year Master’s students who have submitted their thesis can apply, but must submit results by 30 November 2026
  • Desirable: CSIR/UGC-NET or GATE
  • Age: at most 32 years on the last date of application

Selection is by a written test and an interview, in person at NIT Kurukshetra. If you have GATE, NET or another national-level exam, you skip the written test. The written test follows the GATE/NET syllabus of your subject. Late or incomplete applications are rejected. No TA/DA is paid.

Pay and duration

  • ₹37,000 a month plus HRA as per norms
  • First term up to 30 June 2027; it can continue until September 2029 or the end of the project, based on semester-wise performance
  • The selected candidate is encouraged to do a Ph.D. at NIT Kurukshetra

How to prepare for this application

  • Know the AMR problem: how bacteria resist drugs, and what data (genomes, MIC values, lab tests) models learn from.
  • Revise model testing: adversarial examples, coverage criteria and why a high test accuracy can hide failures.
  • Learn genetic algorithms: selection, crossover and mutation, and how they can search for inputs that break a model.
  • Know explainable ML: SHAP, LIME and feature importance, and why doctors need to see the reason behind a prediction.
  • Prepare for the written test: if you have no GATE or NET, revise the GATE computer science syllabus.
