Job Description

IIT Hyderabad is hiring two JRFs in MRI research at its Applied Magnetic Resonance Imaging science and Technology lab (aMRIt lab). The lab is in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The project builds new MRI methods and hardware.

At a glance

  • Post: Junior Research Fellow, two posts
  • Where: Department of Biomedical Engineering, IIT Hyderabad
  • Principal Investigator: Dr Jaladhar Neelavalli
  • Fellowship: ₹37,000 a month + HRA (as per government norms, if applicable)
  • Duration: 2 years, extendable by 1 more year
  • Apply by: Open until filled (ResearchJobs.in will re-check on 28 October 2026)

The project is titled “Development of advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methods and hardware”. Its work includes an ultra-low-field MRI system. The advertisement says the online form stays open until suitable candidates are recruited, so there is no fixed closing date.

About the JRF in MRI research at IIT Hyderabad

  • Build electronic hardware for the ultra-low-field MRI system
  • Write software for system control, data acquisition and visualisation
  • Develop deep-learning methods for image reconstruction and image enhancement
  • Prepare technical reports, papers and patents from the project

Why this role matters

Low-cost, low-field MRI could bring scans to places that cannot afford a standard scanner. This post mixes electronics, software and machine learning on one instrument, which is rare training for an engineering graduate.

Eligibility

  • B.E./B.Tech in ECE, Electrical, Instrumentation, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, AI or a related field, with at least 70% or 7.0 CGPA and a valid GATE score; or
  • M.E./M.Tech in the same fields, with at least 70% or 7.0 CGPA; or
  • M.Sc. in Physics or Chemistry with at least 70% or 7.0 CGPA and a valid GATE score
  • Useful skills: signal and image processing, analog and digital circuits, Python, C/C++ or MATLAB, VLSI, embedded systems and FPGAs, PyTorch, ML for medical imaging, EM modelling
  • Knowledge of MRI physics and image reconstruction is strongly desirable, but not required

Shortlisting is based on your academic record and achievements. Only shortlisted candidates get an interview email. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee a call. The selected candidates will be encouraged to join the IIT Hyderabad PhD programme.

Pay and duration

  • ₹37,000 a month plus HRA as per government norms, if applicable
  • 2 years, extendable by 1 more year based on performance and project needs

How to apply

Apply through the online form linked in the IIT Hyderabad advertisement (PDF). The ad gives it as a short link. The form may ask you to sign in with a Google account. The ad is also listed under Postdoc/JRF/SRF positions on the IIT Hyderabad careers page.

Key dates

  • Advertised: 16 September 2026
  • Closing date: none. The form stays open until the posts are filled. We will re-check on 28 October 2026.

How to prepare for this application

  • Know the MRI signal chain: RF coils, preamplifiers, gradient drivers, the ADC and the spectrometer. Be ready to sketch it.
  • Read on low-field MRI: why low-field and portable scanners are growing, and what makes their images noisy.
  • Show one hardware or code project: a board you designed, FPGA code, or a reconstruction script. Bring the numbers.
  • Learn the basics of MRI reconstruction: k-space, the Fourier transform, undersampling and how deep learning helps.
  • Think about the PhD path: the ad encourages PhD registration, so know the IITH PhD rules. Use our Find a supervisor page to compare labs.
