Job Description
This JRF in computational materials science at IIT Roorkee builds software to simulate how microstructure forms during selective laser melting. It is a five-year post that can lead to a PhD. Apply by email by 5 November 2026.
At a glance
- Post: Junior Research Fellow (JRF), one post
- Where: Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Roorkee
- Principal Investigator: Dr Arka Lahiri
- Funded by: Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)
- Fellowship: ₹37,000 a month for the first two years; can be upgraded to SRF at ₹42,000 after two years
- Duration: Five years
- Open to: Indian nationals only
- Apply by: 5 November 2026, 5 pm, by email
The project is titled “Multiscale modelling of selective laser melting”. Selective laser melting is a metal 3D printing process. The ad says the selected candidate may get a chance to join the PhD programme.
About the selective laser melting JRF at IIT Roorkee
- Develop computational software that simulates microstructure evolution during selective laser melting
- Work across length scales, from the melt pool to the grain structure
- Report and present results to the project team
The ad’s job description is one line. The second point follows the project title.
Why this role matters
Metal 3D printing is moving into aerospace and medical parts. Good simulation cuts the costly trial prints. Five years of funding is long for a project post, so this can carry you through a full PhD.
Eligibility
- You must be eligible for a PhD position in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Roorkee
- The ad points to the IIT Roorkee Spring 2026 PhD brochure for these rules
- Indian nationals only
- SC/ST candidates get preference when qualifications and experience are equal
Check that you meet the eligibility before you apply. Bring your original certificates for verification. No TA/DA is paid. The ad gives no age limit and no separate GATE or NET rule; the PhD brochure decides that.
Pay and duration
- ₹37,000 a month for the first two years
- Can be upgraded to SRF at ₹42,000 a month after two years
- The ad does not mention HRA
- Duration: five years
How to apply
Email your application to the Principal Investigator at arka.lahiri@mt.iitr.ac.in by 5 November 2026, 5 pm. Send an application on plain paper with a detailed CV that lists your degrees in order, your research and industry experience, and attested copies of your degree and experience certificates. Read the official advertisement (PDF) first.

How to prepare for this application
- Learn the SLM process: laser power, scan speed, hatch spacing, melt pools and keyholes.
- Revise solidification: constitutional undercooling, G and R, and columnar-to-equiaxed transition.
- Know the main models: phase-field, cellular automata and Monte Carlo grain growth, and when each fits.
- Show your coding: a small solver in C++, Fortran or Python, such as a heat equation or phase-field code, helps a lot.
- Read the group's work: look at Dr Arka Lahiri's papers on microstructure modelling. Use our Find a supervisor page to compare groups.
