Job Description
This JRF in mechanical engineering at IIT Roorkee tests how moisture ageing weakens sandwich composites used in armament. The work covers fracture and fatigue tests. Apply by email by 15 November 2026.
At a glance
- Post: Junior Research Fellow (JRF), one post
- Where: Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, IIT Roorkee
- Principal Investigator: Prof. Indra Vir Singh
- Funded by: Armament Research Board, DRDO, Delhi
- Fellowship: ₹37,000 a month
- Project period: 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028 (three years), as printed in the ad
- Open to: Indian nationals only
- Apply by: 15 November 2026, 5 pm, by email
The project is titled “Effect of Hygroscopic Ageing on the Mechanical and Fracture-Fatigue Behaviour of Sandwich Composites for Armament Applications”.
About the sandwich composites JRF at IIT Roorkee
- Characterise sandwich composites with Nomex, PMI foam and PVC foam cores
- Age specimens in moisture and check how their mechanical properties change
- Test delamination under Mode-I and Mode-II loading, for aged and unaged samples
- Run fatigue tests and compare aged samples with unaged ones
Why this role matters
Defence systems use light sandwich panels, and they must survive humid storage for years. This project builds the test data that designers need. Fracture and fatigue testing skills also transfer well to aerospace jobs.
Eligibility
- B.Tech. in Mechanical, Production or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
- And M.E./M.Tech. in Machine Design, Applied Mechanics or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
- GATE-qualified candidates are preferred
- Indian nationals only
- SC/ST candidates get preference when qualifications and experience are equal
Only shortlisted candidates are told about the interview, by email. The interview is online on Webex or Google Meet. The ad gives no age limit.
Pay and duration
- ₹37,000 a month
- The ad does not mention HRA
- Project period as printed: 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028
- The ad says the selected candidate can do a PhD. After the project, the PhD student gets the MHRD fellowship as per institute policy

How to prepare for this application
- Know sandwich panels: how face sheets and cores share load, and the common failure modes.
- Revise fracture mechanics: energy release rate, Mode-I DCB and Mode-II ENF tests, and R-curves.
- Learn about moisture ageing: Fickian diffusion, weight-gain curves and how water attacks the resin and the core.
- Brush up on fatigue: S-N curves, stiffness loss and how to set up a fatigue test in a UTM.
- Read the group's work: Prof. Indra Vir Singh works on FEM and X-FEM for fracture. Use our Find a supervisor page to compare labs.
