Programmes and research centres in the IIIT Hyderabad PhD round

  • Computer Science and Engineering: centres include CVIT (vision), LTRC (language), MLL (machine learning), RRC (robotics), CSTAR (security), DSAC (data science), SERC (software) and CSG
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering: CVEST, LTRC, RRC and SPCRC

Why this role matters

IIIT Hyderabad runs a research-first model, and many of its centres are well known in vision, language and robotics. The January intake is smaller than the main round, so you face fewer rivals. Students without NET or GATE also get a stipend here, which is not common.

Eligibility

  • 60% or equivalent in the qualifying degree, for every programme
  • CSE, ECE and Computational Linguistics: B.E./B.Tech./M.E./M.Tech. in any branch, a 4-year B.S. with maths, M.Sc., MCA or M.A. in maths
  • Civil: a B.E./B.Tech./M.E./M.Tech. in civil, mechanical, CSE, ECE or EEE, or a 4-year B.S. with maths
  • Computational Natural Sciences and Bioinformatics: an M.Sc. in a basic science, an engineering degree in CS, IT, biotech, bioinformatics or biomedical, or an MCA

  • Spatial Informatics: M.E./M.Tech./M.Sc. in any branch, MCA, or M.A. in geography

The eligibility table labels Cognitive Science as “(CNS)”. CNS is also the short form for Computational Natural Sciences, so check you pick the right programme. Some centre links on the page are broken. Human Sciences is not offered this round.

  • NET or GATE qualified full-time scholars: Rs 37,000 to Rs 42,000 a month through the AICTE Doctoral Fellowship, subject to AICTE rules
  • Other full-time scholars: Rs 31,000 to Rs 35,000 a month, by stage of the PhD
  • Extra pay is possible through a teaching assistantship
  • Application fee: Rs 2,500, non-refundable
