Job Description

Stockholm University’s Department of Philosophy is recruiting a PhD student for DECIDE, an ERC-funded project led by Siska De Baerdemaeker, who will be primary supervisor. DECIDE asks how scientists do and should decide collectively which large-scale experiments to pursue in astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology, where instruments can cost billions of euros. Its main case study is the US Astronomy Decadal Survey, and the thesis lies in history and philosophy of experiment, with approaches from HPS and science and technology studies welcome.

What Stockholm University is looking for

• General entry for doctoral studies
• Specific entry: at least 30 ECTS in theoretical philosophy at advanced level, including a master’s thesis, or equivalent
• A research plan relevant to DECIDE’s goals

Nice to have

• Experience in history and philosophy of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology (not required, but may be a merit)
• Critical ability, English, creativity and independence

Pay and location

Doctoral students at Stockholm University are employed on a fixed salary; the advert gives no figure.
