Job Description
Uppsala University is hiring a PhD student in semi-solid electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. You will join the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre. The work covers electrolyte design, cell building and testing. Apply by 20 October 2026.
At a glance
- Position: Doctoral student, 100% (ref. UFV-PA 2026/2775)
- Where: Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala, Sweden
- Start: 4 January 2027, or as agreed
- Pay: Not stated in the ad
- Contact: Guiomar Hernández
- Apply: 20 October 2026
What the Uppsala battery electrolyte PhD student will do
- Develop semi-solid electrolytes and study how they perform in lithium-ion batteries
- Formulate electrolytes and assemble and test battery cells
- Use electrochemistry, spectroscopy, microscopy and structural methods
- Plan and run experiments, often with colleagues, and analyse the results
- Present at conferences, write papers and a thesis, take courses and possibly teach
Why this role matters
Liquid electrolytes can leak and catch fire. Semi-solid electrolytes aim to make lithium-ion cells safer while keeping good performance. The Ångström battery group is one of Europe’s largest in this field.
What Uppsala University is looking for
- A second-cycle (master’s) degree in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering or materials science; or 240 credits with 60 at master’s level including a 15-credit project; or equivalent knowledge
- Very good spoken and written English
- Strong motivation, and the ability to work alone and in a large team
- Knowledge and experience of electrochemistry and battery materials characterisation
Nice to have
- Study or research experience in batteries, electrolytes or polymers
Pay and location
The ad does not state a salary. It is a temporary doctoral post under the Higher Education Ordinance (chapter 5, section 7), full time, based in Uppsala. The ad says the post may need security vetting, which you must pass to be employed.
How to apply
Apply through the official Uppsala University page. The closing date is 20 October 2026. Apply through Uppsala University’s Varbi system and quote UFV-PA 2026/2775. Questions go to Guiomar Hernández (guiomar.hernandez@kemi.uu.se).

How to prepare for this application
- Lead with electrochemistry. List the methods you know: cyclic voltammetry, EIS, galvanostatic cycling.
- Show any cell-building work. Coin cells or pouch cells made in a glovebox are strong evidence.
- Mention polymers. Semi-solid electrolytes often use polymer hosts. Say what you know.
- Read the group's recent papers. Check Ångström Advanced Battery Centre work on electrolytes.
- Apply early. The window closes on 20 October, and Varbi uploads can take time.
