Job Description

Stockholm University’s Department of Physical Geography is recruiting a PhD student in glacial biogeochemistry. Glaciers grind bedrock into fine sediment whose reactions with meltwater release nutrients that feed downstream ecosystems, and meltwater from mountain glaciers and the Greenland Ice Sheet is increasing. The project quantifies nutrient release from glacial sediments across catchments and rock types, mainly through laboratory experiments.

About the glacial biogeochemistry PhD

• Run lab experiments on nutrient release from glacial sediments, varying grain size, sediment and solute concentration
• Use geochemical and biogeochemical analytical techniques, with partner laboratories in Sweden and abroad
• Analyse data statistically and with models
• Possibly add fieldwork to existing samples, and present at conferences

How doctoral employment works at Stockholm University

Doctoral students are employed for up to the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The first contract is for up to one year and is then renewed for up to two years at a time, and up to 20% of working time may go to teaching, research or administration. What Stockholm University is looking for

• General eligibility for doctoral studies
• Specific entry: 240 credits (60 advanced) in Earth science, geography or a relevant natural or engineering science, with at least 30 credits of independent work (15 advanced)

Nice to have

• Knowledge of geochemistry or biogeochemistry
• Experience with geochemical lab methods
• Analytical thinking, independence and good English

Pay and location
