Job Description

The Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University is looking for a PhD student in experimental physics to build and run a 2D ion trap for open-system quantum simulation with ions excited to Rydberg states. The position is part of the ERC Synergy project Open 2D Quantum Simulator (OPEN-2QS), which aims to study phenomena such as quantum glasses, molecular dynamics and quantum thermodynamics, in close collaboration with experimental and theory groups at the universities of Mainz and Tübingen.

What Stockholm University is looking for

  • General entry: a second-cycle degree, or 240 credits including 60 at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge
  • Specific entry: a BSc in physics or equivalent, with 60 second-cycle credits in physics including a degree project of at least 15 credits (the project may still be in progress but must be at least half done)
  • English equivalent to Swedish English B, shown for example by an English-taught degree, IELTS Academic 6.0 (no section below 5.0) or TOEFL iBT 79
  • Requirements must be met by the application deadline

Nice to have

  • Documented knowledge in a relevant research field
  • Analytical and creative thinking, initiative, independence and ability to collaborate
  • The advert also lists written and oral proficiency in Swedish and English among its selection criteria

Pay and location

Doctoral students at Stockholm University are employed on a fixed salary; the advert gives no figure. Contracts are renewed in steps (first up to one year, then up to two years at a time) up to four years of full-time study.
