Job Description
Lund University’s Department of Automatic Control is recruiting a Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral student within AEGIS, an EU doctoral network training 15 PhD students from 2026 to 2030 on adaptive, grid-interactive edge datacentres. The project builds a control layer that turns high-level intents such as cutting carbon, offering flexibility or reducing cost into coordinated actions on cooling, batteries and computing hardware, using classical control, AI and reinforcement learning. It includes two three-month visits to EPFL in Switzerland and Elisa in Finland.

About the datacentre control PhD
- Design an intent language that captures carbon, flexibility and cost
- Break high-level intents down into control actions, and tune power-performance and thermal models online
- Deliver control software with measured latency, tested on real experimental data
- Build telemetry that reports headroom without breaking service levels
- Take 90 ECTS of courses and teach up to 20% of working time

What Lund University is looking for
- General eligibility for doctoral studies
- Knowledge equivalent to Lund’s basic automatic control course (FRTF05) and a relevant second-cycle specialisation, plus an MSc in engineering or equivalent
- No doctoral degree at the date of recruitment
- Not lived, studied or worked in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months before applying
Nice to have
- Interest in both computing infrastructure and energy systems
- Control, optimisation or reinforcement learning experience
Pay and location
Lund’s advert does not state the salary. MSCA doctoral positions are fully funded, and the network runs from 2026 to 2030.
