Job Description

These PhD positions in photonic quantum computing are in the Quantum Light Sources Group at DTU Electro, Denmark. There are three projects on quantum-dot single-photon sources and system design. They are part of the MSCA Doctoral Network PHOTONIQC.

At a glance

  • Positions: PhD scholarships, three projects (PhD1, PhD2, PhD3)
  • Where: DTU Electro, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
  • Network: MSCA Doctoral Network “A Photonic Quantum Computer (PHOTONIQC)”, grant 101312868
  • Duration: 3 years, full time; start 1 March 2027 or by agreement
  • Apply: 15 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time

About the three PhD projects

  • PhD1: design and simulate quantum-dot single-photon sources with advanced optical tools, and propose better designs
  • PhD2: characterise the devices in the optical lab: purity, efficiency and photon indistinguishability
  • PhD3: build a network blueprint for photonic graph-state computing, linking component performance to the success of the full computation
  • All: supervise MSc and BSc project students, and publish papers and conference talks
  • Secondments of 1 to 2 months at partners such as Ruhr University, CNRS, CEA, Quandela and INL
  • Training schools, workshops and a final conference with the other network students

The PHOTONIQC network will employ 15 PhD students in seven countries. Together they work on distributed photonic quantum computing.

Why this role matters

Photonic quantum computers need sources that give one identical photon every time. DTU’s group designs such sources. The network gives you secondments at top labs and a quantum-computing company, all within your PhD.

What DTU is looking for

  • A two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or an equal degree
  • You may apply before you finish your master’s, but you cannot start without it
  • MSCA mobility rule: you must not have lived or had your main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment

Pay and location

Pay follows the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The ad gives a minimum of DKK 29.691,75 base salary and DKK 1.551,00 PhD supplement, plus pension paid by DTU. The ad does not state the period, so check it with DTU. Because DTU works in critical technology, open-source background checks may be done.

How to apply

Apply through the official DTU page. The closing date is 15 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Click “Apply now” and upload one PDF in English: a motivation letter, CV, grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diplomas with the grading scale.

How to prepare for this application

  • Choose your project (PhD1, PhD2 or PhD3) and name it in the application form field
  • Check the mobility rule against your last three years before you apply
  • Revise quantum dots, micropillar and nanowire cavities, and the Purcell effect
  • Know Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and g(2), the tests for indistinguishable single photons
  • Put the letter, CV, transcripts and diplomas with the grading scale into one PDF

About DTU

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) was founded in 1829 by Hans Christian Ørsted. Its main campus is in Kgs. Lyngby, north of Copenhagen. It has about 13,800 students, 1,600 PhD students and 6,500 staff.

DTU Electro has more than 300 researchers in electrical and photonics engineering.
