Job Description

This postdoc in quantum optics theory is in the theoretical quantum optics group at the Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen. You will help design and model a prototype quantum internet. The post is part of the European Quantum Internet Alliance.

At a glance

  • Position: Postdoc, 2 years
  • Where: Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Contact: Professor Anders S. Sørensen
  • Start: 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible after
  • Apply: 9 November 2026, 23:59 (GMT+1)

About the quantum internet project

  • Help design and model the prototype quantum internet planned for the end of the project
  • Work on the general theory of quantum repeaters and quantum networks
  • Possibly work on generating narrow-band single photons, with the experimental groups at the institute
  • Do research in theoretical quantum optics and quantum information

The Quantum Internet Alliance is a European project. It aims to build large-scale quantum networks. The ad’s duties line says “theoretical quantum options”, which looks like a typo for optics.

Why this role matters

A quantum internet would link quantum computers and sensors with secure, entangled connections. Theory decides which repeater and network designs are worth building. This group helped found the field, and you would shape a real prototype.

What University of Copenhagen is looking for

  • A PhD (the ad asks for Master and PhD diplomas or equivalent)
  • A research background that fits theoretical quantum optics and quantum information
  • A research plan for current and future work
  • Papers you can show; the ad asks for reprints of three relevant ones

Pay and location

The ad gives no figure. Terms and pay follow the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations for academics in the state. You can negotiate a salary supplement. The university may run a background screening before you join. Interviews start in December.

How to apply

Apply through the official University of Copenhagen page. The closing date is 9 November 2026, 23:59 (GMT+1). Click APPLY NOW on the ad and apply in English. Attach a CV, Master and PhD diplomas, a research plan, a full publication list and separate reprints of three relevant papers.

How to prepare for this application

  • Write a research plan that links your past work to quantum repeaters or network design
  • Revise repeater protocols, entanglement swapping, purification and memory-based schemes
  • Know the main photon sources and interfaces used in networks: quantum dots, atoms, colour centres
  • Pick three papers that show your theory skills best; the ad asks for separate reprints
  • Read recent Quantum Internet Alliance results so you can discuss their goals

About the Niels Bohr Institute

The Niels Bohr Institute is the physics department of the University of Copenhagen, in its Faculty of Science. It has strong groups in quantum optics, both theory and experiment. The university belongs to the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).
