Job Description
Stockholm University’s Division of Computational Mathematics is looking for a postdoc to improve and analyse time-stepping schemes for glacial ice dynamics, motivated by the need for more reliable predictions of how ice sheets and glaciers respond to climate change. The project builds on a stabilisation method that allows much larger time steps, and aims both to understand its accuracy rigorously and to turn that understanding into an adaptive algorithm that picks the largest time step that keeps the desired accuracy.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoctoral fellow (1 post)

About the ice-sheet numerics postdoc
- Develop convergence theory for the stabilised time-stepping scheme, analysing a free-boundary problem coupled to the Stokes equations
- Build an adaptive time-step algorithm from that theory
- Implement and test the methods in the ice-sheet model Elmer/Ice
- Run numerical experiments on real cases, for example the Ryder Glacier in northern Greenland
- Collaborate with glaciologists, write papers and present at international conferences
What Stockholm University is looking for
- A doctoral degree, completed by the time of the employment decision
- According to the advert, the doctorate must have been obtained at an institution outside Sweden (or be deemed equivalent to such a degree)
- A strong background in numerical analysis or scientific computing
- Experience with time-stepping methods and the finite element method, preferably for fluid dynamics, solid mechanics or other moving-boundary problems
Nice to have
- A doctorate completed within three years of the deadline (longer in special circumstances such as parental or sick leave)
- Experience with Earth-science applications (not required; the group can teach the domain)
- Strong communication skills and interest in working with geophysicists and glaciologists
Pay and location
Stockholm University sets the salary individually; the advert does not state a figure or the length of the contract.
How to apply

How to prepare for this application
- Show your analysis: point to a paper with stability or convergence proofs for a time-stepping or FEM scheme.
- Code matters too: mention FEM codes you have developed or extended; experience with Elmer or FEniCS would help.
- Free boundaries: any work on moving-boundary or Stokes problems is directly relevant.
- Check eligibility: the advert asks for a doctorate from outside Sweden, so confirm yours qualifies.
- Deadline: applications close on 15 October 2026.
