Job Description
Lund University’s Division of Heat Transfer is hiring a postdoc to build GPU-accelerated thermal runaway simulations for lithium-ion battery cells, modules and packs, within the Swedish government’s COMPEL initiative on battery technology and electrification and in collaboration with Scania Industrial Battery Systems. Thermal runaway is a chain reaction that can release a cell’s stored energy uncontrollably and cause fires, and the project develops next-generation OpenFOAM methods on modern GPU architectures to predict how it starts and spreads.

About the thermal runaway postdoc
- Develop and implement GPU-accelerated thermal runaway models and numerical methods in OpenFOAM
- Design high-performance frameworks for reacting-flow and battery-safety simulation on GPUs
- Couple cell-level models to module, pack and system-level simulations
- Publish in leading journals and conferences, and work with Scania and COMPEL partners
- Contribute to funding applications and supervise doctoral and master’s projects

What Lund University is looking for
- A PhD in the subject of the position; priority to candidates who graduated within three years of the deadline
- Very good spoken and written English
- Documented experience of programming and/or energy system modelling
Nice to have
- Developing and optimising scientific software for GPUs, with CUDA, HIP, SYCL, OpenACC or similar
- Porting CPU-based CFD or multiphysics codes to heterogeneous HPC systems
- Profiling and optimising parallel code with tools such as NVIDIA Nsight or rocProfiler
- Parallel programming with MPI and OpenMP
