Read the official EPFL advertisement before you apply.

The project

ALCHEMY develops accessible chemistries and processing strategies that let a wide variety of advanced functional materials and devices be fabricated. This full-time position works on the polymer chemistry behind vat photopolymerization.

Vat photopolymerization builds an object by curing liquid resin with light. What the printer can make is set almost entirely by what the resin can do, so designing new monomers and formulations is how the process moves forward. The advertisement asks for experience in the development of macromonomers and monomers, among other routes.

What you need

  • A PhD in polymer chemistry, materials chemistry or a related field
  • Experience in the development of monomers and macromonomers, or in formulation and processing for additive manufacturing
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

EPFL pays doctoral assistants and postdoctoral researchers on published Swiss federal scales, which are among the higher ones in Europe. This advertisement states no figure, so check the scale for your grade and the cost of living in Neuchâtel before you decide.

How to apply

How to prepare for this application

  • Synthesis experience is the core ask. Name the monomer families you have made.
  • Printing is the application. Any hands-on time with an SLA or DLP printer is worth mentioning.
  • EPFL works in English. Research and teaching at this level run in English, so French is useful but rarely required.
  • Doctoral candidates apply twice. A lab offer at EPFL is normally followed by admission to a doctoral programme, so check the programme's own requirements too.
