Job Description
Lund University’s Faculty of Science is hiring a postdoc in structural biology to study viruses that infect diatoms, with the aim of understanding the virus factories they form inside the algal cells. The work runs from growing diatoms and infecting them, through characterising infection by electron microscopy and virus titres, to purifying viruses and cellular components and solving structures by cryo-electron microscopy.

How Lund postdocs work
A postdoc at Lund University is a career-development post focused on research, normally for applicants whose PhD is no more than three years old at the time of the employment decision. Teaching can take up to 20% of working time, and the post includes three weeks of training in university teaching.
What to include in your application
Lund asks for a single PDF in English with your CV and publication list, a description of past research and future interests of no more than three pages, contact details for at least two references, and a copy of your doctoral degree certificate and any other certificates you want considered.
What Lund University is looking for
- A PhD in the subject, normally completed no more than three years before the employment decision
- Documented practical experience in cryo-EM structure determination
- Documented practical experience working with viruses
- Documented practical experience cultivating prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic algae
- Very good written and spoken English
Nice to have
- In situ structure determination by cryo-electron tomography
- Non-cryogenic electron microscopy
- Protein cloning, expression, purification and characterisation
- Experience supervising students
Pay and location
Lund’s advert lists a monthly salary without an amount. The post is full time in Lund, starting on 15 November 2026 or as agreed.

How to prepare for this application
- Lead with maps: list structures you have solved, with resolution and EMDB/PDB codes if public.
- Show virus and algae work: both are required, so give concrete examples of culture and infection experiments.
- Tomography: cryo-ET or subtomogram averaging experience is a strong merit.
- Research statement: Lund asks for up to three pages on past and future research; tie it to virus factories.
- Deadline: applications close on 25 September 2026.
