Job Description
IIT Roorkee’s Department of Mathematics is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Mathematics for an industry-sponsored research project led by Prof. Ram Jiwari. The project, “Lie Algebraic Group Classification and their Applications to Hyperbolic Models Arising in Thermal Process Control”, is sponsored by Bhawani Industries Pvt. Ltd.
This post suits recent mathematics PhDs who work on differential equations, symmetry methods or mathematical modelling, and who would like experience on an industry-linked research project.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoctoral Fellow (one post)
- Where: Department of Mathematics, IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand
- Pay: Rs 50,000 per month, consolidated
- Duration: ten months

About the postdoctoral project in mathematics
The project brings Lie group (symmetry) analysis to hyperbolic partial differential equations that model thermal processes. In general, symmetry methods can reduce such equations to simpler forms, produce exact solutions and classify which models admit them, which helps in understanding and controlling the processes they describe. The fellow will carry out research and development work under project grant No. BWI-3056-MTD/26-27.
Eligibility
- A PhD in Mathematics
- Open to Indian nationals
Among equally qualified and experienced candidates, SC/ST candidates will be preferred.
Fellowship and duration
- Rs 50,000 per month (consolidated)
- Duration: ten months
- One position
How to apply
Email your application to the Principal Investigator at ram.jiwari@ma.iitr.ac.in by 27 September 2026, 5 PM. Include an application on plain paper with a detailed CV listing your degrees and certificates in chronological order, your research and other experience, and attested copies of your degree and experience certificates.
A walk-in interview will be held in hybrid mode on 29 September 2026 at 10 AM in the Department of Mathematics, IIT Roorkee. Bring your original certificates for verification; no TA/DA is paid. Full details are in the official IIT Roorkee advertisement.

How to prepare for the postdoc interview
- Lie symmetry analysis: revise how to find the point symmetries of a PDE, the Lie algebra they generate, optimal systems of subalgebras, and similarity reductions.
- Hyperbolic models of heat transport: characteristics, conservation laws, and equations with finite propagation speed such as the telegraph (Cattaneo) equation.
- Computation: be ready to discuss any symbolic (Maple, Mathematica) or numerical tools you have used to find or check solutions.
- Your thesis: a clear ten-minute summary of your PhD results and how they connect to this project.
- The industry angle: the project is industry-sponsored, so think about how you would explain a symmetry-based result to an engineer.
Because the interview is in hybrid mode, ask the Principal Investigator's office in advance whether you can join online, and test your setup beforehand.
About IIT Roorkee
IIT Roorkee traces its origins to 1847, when it was founded as a college of civil engineering, which makes it one of the oldest technical institutions in Asia. It became the University of Roorkee in 1949 and an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. Today it is home to departments across engineering, the sciences, management and the humanities, and hosts many externally funded research projects like this one.
