Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring Postdoctoral Research Associates in transportation AI and smart mobility, working on connected vehicles, digital twins and energy-efficient transport. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in AI-Enabled Connected Vehicles and Smart Mobility
- Where: Applied Research for Mobility Systems Group, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
- Requisition ID: 17252
- Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
- Pay: the advertisement states no figure
Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The group works on transportation artificial intelligence, digital twins, intelligent transportation systems, cooperative driving automation and energy-efficient mobility. You would develop, validate and demonstrate mobility technologies using large-scale transportation data, high-fidelity simulation, vehicle-in-the-loop testing and real field deployments.
The central emphasis is developing, testing and deploying connected-vehicle technologies and smart-infrastructure control in real settings, to improve how much energy mobility systems use. The research pulls together multimodal transportation data, digital twins, vehicle dynamics and energy models, AI-based control and optimisation, connected infrastructure, dynamometer testing and field demonstrations, for passenger, transit and freight vehicles.
One line in the advertisement is worth repeating: candidates are not expected to have expertise in every area. Strong depth in one or more, plus an interest in working across disciplines, is what they ask for.
What you need
- A PhD in transportation engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering or a related field
- Depth in at least one of: transportation data, simulation, vehicle dynamics, AI-based control, or connected infrastructure
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17252. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Depth beats breadth here. The advert says so directly, so lead with the one area you know best.
- Real deployment is the point. Field trials and vehicle-in-the-loop work count for a lot.
- Quote the requisition ID, 17252. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
