The work
The National Center for Computational Sciences is home to some of the fastest supercomputers and storage systems in the world. This post works on understanding and making efficient use of distributed storage and I/O subsystems for HPC, scientific artificial intelligence and scientific edge computing.
Two research directions are named. The first is flexible, composable storage service architectures that expose useful data container abstractions, so applications can state what they need for I/O performance, atomicity, consistency, durability and retention. The second is intelligent, automated selection and composition of storage capabilities and interconnection topologies, simplifying the use of diverse distributed resources through better data placement, layout, tiering and movement.
Day to day that means collaborating with internal and external researchers, characterising I/O and storage performance of HPC and scientific AI applications on multi-tier storage systems, and designing and evaluating approaches for time-sensitive or data-intensive processing.
What you need
- A PhD in computer science, computer engineering or a related field
- Work on parallel or distributed storage, file systems, or I/O performance
- Comfort profiling real applications on large systems
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16764. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Name the file systems you have worked with. Lustre, GPFS, DAOS or object stores.
- There are two storage postdocs open here. Read both and apply to the closer fit; they are complementary.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16764. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
