Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate to predict coastal land loss with machine learning, focused on the Gulf Coast. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Coastal Landscape Geospatial Modelling

The work
The work synthesises regional-scale remote sensing imagery and ecological monitoring data, and develops data-driven methods for predicting land loss and ecosystem transitions in the wetland-rich landscapes of the Gulf Coast, with a focus on coastal Louisiana.
Coastal Louisiana is losing land at a rate that makes it one of the clearest natural experiments in disturbance-driven ecosystem change anywhere. Predicting where the transition happens next is both a scientific problem and a planning one.
The post supports EGRET, Exploring Gulf Region Ecosystem Transitions, a multi-institutional collaboration on disturbance-driven ecosystem transitions across the US Gulf Coast. EGRET uses an integrated model-experiment approach accelerated by AI, to understand how plant, microbial and soil interactions vary across inundation and salinity gradients and shape ecological, hydrological and geomorphological responses to abrupt disturbance. A cohort of postdocs is being hired across several institutions to support this together.
What you need
- A PhD in geospatial science, remote sensing, ecology, environmental science or a related field
- Machine learning applied to remote sensing imagery, and comfort with large geospatial datasets

Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17130. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- A cohort is being hired across institutions. Collaboration across sites is part of the job, so say how you work in distributed teams.
- Name your geospatial stack. Google Earth Engine, GDAL, xarray or similar.
- Quote the requisition ID, 17130. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
