Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in computational solid mechanics, building probabilistic life prediction for high-temperature alloys. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Solid Mechanics for Digital Qualification
- Where: Deposition Science and Technology Group, Manufacturing Science Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
- Requisition ID: 17070
- Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
- Pay: the advertisement states no figure
Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The work uses multiscale modelling and simulation to develop probabilistic lifing frameworks for high-temperature alloys and extreme-environment structural materials. You would collaborate with research staff and industry partners to support certification and qualification of components made by advanced manufacturing processes.
Digital certification is the prize here. Qualifying a printed part today means building and breaking a great many of them; doing it by simulation, with honest uncertainty, is what would make additive manufacturing usable for critical components.
What you need
- Required: a strong background in the mechanical behaviour of materials
- Required: demonstrated experience implementing nonlinear constitutive models in commercial finite element codes such as Abaqus or ANSYS, or open-source ones such as MOOSE or DAMASK
- Preferred: microstructural modelling such as crystal plasticity, applied to fatigue and ductile fracture
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17070. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Implementing constitutive models is required, beyond using them. A UMAT or a MOOSE kernel you wrote is the evidence they want.
- Industry partners are in the loop. Work that has to satisfy a certifying body is the context.
- Quote the requisition ID, 17070. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
