Job Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the meeting point of materials characterisation and data science. The call is open until filled.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Data Science for Materials Characterisation
- Where: Manufacturing Systems Analytics Group, Manufacturing Science Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
- Requisition ID: 16197
- Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
- Pay: the advertisement states no figure
Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The post develops new ways of assessing and improving the quality of components made by advanced manufacturing. The named duties are developing algorithms and software tools for visualising and analysing materials characterisation data; developing data-driven characterisation workflows; and advancing understanding of process-structure-property relationships through digital manufacturing practice.
Process-structure-property is the chain that decides whether a printed part can be trusted. The processing conditions set the microstructure, the microstructure sets the properties, and today that chain is mostly established by expensive destructive testing. Learning it from characterisation data is what would change qualification.
The advertisement also asks for basic experience with AI and machine learning techniques, publication in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and support for research staff.
What you need
- A PhD in materials science, data science, computer science or a related field
- Basic experience with AI and machine learning techniques
- Software development for scientific data analysis and visualisation
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16197. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Imaging data is the likely medium. Microscopy, CT or diffraction, and the pipelines that handle them.
- The AI bar is "basic". Deep materials knowledge with workable ML beats the reverse here.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16197. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
