The work

The post covers complex research on advanced thermal and energy system technologies, in the Thermal System Science Research Section. The named responsibilities run across the whole arc of a hardware project: prototype development, material synthesis and analysis, performance testing, and analysis of results.

Beyond the bench you would prepare technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations and project deliverables for sponsors and stakeholders, and collaborate with researchers, engineers and stakeholders from universities, other national laboratories, government agencies and private industry.

Energy conversion at building and transport scale is where efficiency gains turn into national energy savings, which is why this group sits in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate.

What you need

  • A PhD in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science or a related field
  • Experience across prototype building, materials and performance testing
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply
