Job Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in experimental geochemistry, using neutron and X-ray scattering to watch minerals form. The call is open until filled.

At a glance

  • Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Geochemistry
  • Where: Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences Group, Chemical Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA
  • Requisition ID: 17218
  • Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
  • Pay: the advertisement states no figure

Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.

The work

The research develops an understanding of the stability and reactivity of precipitated amorphous materials, and of how critical elements sit in minerals as amorphous phases turn crystalline. It draws on Department of Energy user facilities: the Spallation Neutron Source at ORNL and the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne.

The named duties are performing wet chemical experiments; performing neutron and X-ray scattering and spectroscopy experiments focused on watching reaction kinetics and mechanisms in situ; analysing that scattering data and helping build the analysis workflows; and publishing and presenting the results.

The team’s interests include contaminant fate and transport underground, crystal nucleation and growth, heterogeneous reaction rates, interface reactivity, energy storage and separations.

What you need

  • A PhD in geosciences, chemistry, materials science, materials chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field, completed within the last five years
  • Experience synthesising and characterising minerals or nanomaterials, for example lithium or sodium ion batteries, solid electrolytes, carbonates or rare-earth structures
  • Preferred: wet chemistry and mineralogy; spectroscopy such as Raman, SEM, EPMA and XAS; and experience working at user facilities

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17218. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application

  • The five-year rule is explicit. The PhD must have been completed within the last five years.
  • User-facility experience is preferred. Any beamtime you have run or supported is worth naming.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 17218. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.

About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
