The work
The post works on system software architectures that support secure computing enclaves on large-scale HPC and supercomputing resources, and on large-scale identity and key management.
Confidential computing is well established on cloud hardware and awkward on supercomputers, where performance assumptions and shared filesystems cut against isolation. Making enclaves work at leadership scale, without losing the performance that justifies the machine, is the research problem. It matters because sensitive data — medical, industrial, national security — increasingly needs the same machines as open science.
Named interests include integrating memory encryption and confidential computing features into HPC system software. The National Center for Computational Sciences hosts some of the fastest supercomputers and storage systems in the world.
What you need
- A PhD in computer science, computer engineering or a related field
- Systems software, operating systems or security work, ideally touching trusted execution environments
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16765. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Name the hardware features you know. SGX, SEV, TDX or CCA.
- Performance is the constraint. Security that halves the machine is no use here.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16765. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
