Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The post contributes to scalable storage and memory architectures, telemetry-driven system optimisation, and application-driven performance analysis for HPC, scientific AI and scientific edge computing, inside the National Center for Computational Sciences.
Three research interests are named. Telemetry collection and analysis, to inform system optimisation, workload characterisation and predictive fault tolerance. Architectural exploration and performance modelling of high-bandwidth memory and DDR memory systems for data-intensive scientific computing. And redesigning storage systems for AI and edge-to-HPC workflows, covering data movement, retention policies and user-defined storage behaviours.
Predictive fault tolerance is the interesting thread. At leadership scale something is always failing, and telemetry that can anticipate it is worth a great deal of machine time.
What you need
- A PhD in computer science, computer engineering or a related field
- Experience with system telemetry, memory architecture or storage design
- Performance modelling and workload characterisation on large systems
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16766. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- Telemetry at scale is the distinctive bit. Any work on failure prediction from system logs is directly relevant.
- HBM and DDR modelling is named. Mention memory-system work if you have it.
- Quote the requisition ID, 16766. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
