Job Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in supramolecular chemistry and ion separations. The call is open until filled.

At a glance

  • Post: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Supramolecular Chemistry and Ion Separations
  • Where: Chemical Separations Group, Chemical Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA
  • Requisition ID: 17213
  • Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
  • Pay: the advertisement states no figure

Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.

The work

The post delivers research on new molecules, materials and methods for ion recognition and stimuli-responsive separations. Separating one ion from a mixture of chemically similar ones is one of the harder problems in chemistry, and it sits behind critical mineral supply, nuclear fuel reprocessing and water treatment alike.

The named duties are participating in project planning and execution; hands-on synthesis and characterisation using NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies and X-ray crystallography; and employing separation techniques including crystallisation, solvent extraction and photochemical methods.

You would work closely with specialists in synthesis, separations chemistry, theory, spectroscopy and materials characterisation, and be responsible for publications, presentations and invention disclosures.

What you need

  • A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field
  • Synthetic chemistry, with characterisation by NMR, IR, UV-Vis and crystallography
  • An interest in separations: crystallisation, solvent extraction, photochemistry
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17213. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application

  • Invention disclosures are named in the duties. This group expects work that could be patented, so applied thinking counts.
  • Stimuli-responsive is the modern angle. Separations you can switch on and off are the interesting part.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 17213. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
