Job Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher in composites manufacturing and characterisation, working with new bio- and waste-derived plastics. The call is open until filled.

At a glance

  • Post: Postdoctoral Researcher in Composites Manufacturing from Bio- and Waste-Derived Resins
  • Where: Manufacturing Science Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
  • Requisition ID: 17067
  • Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
  • Pay: the advertisement states no figure

Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.

The work

The immediate project need is developing and optimising products for industries from automotive to aerospace, made from new bio- and waste-derived plastic resins and fillers. Turning a waste stream into a structural composite is an attractive idea that usually fails on properties, so the characterisation half of this job is where it is decided.

The advertisement asks for someone who will either refine existing expertise or build new expertise in composites manufacturing, across methods from benchtop through to pilot scale, and who will then use the characterisation capabilities available across the laboratory to understand and optimise what they have made.

It also asks, in plain terms, for someone who cares about turning higher-level project deliverables into a timely, high-quality product. That is a note about working to industrial deadlines as much as scientific ones.

What you need

  • A PhD in materials science, polymer science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Composites manufacturing experience, or a clear appetite to develop it
  • Characterisation of polymer and composite materials
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17067. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application

  • The advert welcomes people developing new expertise. A strong polymer scientist without composites experience should still apply.
  • Pilot scale is named. Experience moving something beyond the bench is worth a lot here.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 17067. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
